It Depends on How You’ll Use It

After 34 years at Duraweld, Lee has seen both types of binder used across a huge range of applications. His view is that the material should follow the job: where the binder will be used, how often it will be handled, what it needs to look like and what budget you are working to.

“It really depends on what you are using the binder for, to be honest.”

That is probably the best place to start.

For some projects, the durability and practicality of PVC make it the obvious choice. For others, the printed finish and presentation of paper over board are more important. And in some cases, an encapsulated binder can offer a useful middle ground.

So rather than asking which binder is better, it is more useful to look at where each construction makes the most sense.

When PVC Makes More Sense

PVC ring binders are particularly well suited to practical working environments. The surface is hard-wearing, easy to wipe clean and capable of standing up well to regular handling.

“If you want something that’s going to get knocked about, used every day, or might come into contact with a bit of moisture, I’d lean towards PVC.”

That makes PVC a strong option for applications such as legal files, manufacturing documents, healthcare records, training manuals, site folders and operating procedures.

PVC is also extremely versatile when it comes to how the binder is finished.
It can be printed directly, or clear encapsulated sheets can be incorporated to carry printed graphics. Clear pockets and windows can also be welded directly to the PVC, allowing inserts to sit neatly within the cover or spine.

As Lee explains:

“If you require inserts, PVC will often look far more attractive than adding a self-adhesive window to a paper-over-board binder.”

That can be particularly useful where information needs to be changed from time to time, such as spine labels, cover sheets, product details or training information.
PVC ring binders also tend to work out cheaper per unit than paper-over-board, so where price is an important part of the brief, PVC can often be the more economical option.

Where Paper Over Board Comes Into Its Own

Paper over board has a very different set of strengths.

“It has a more modern feel and suggests a more premium offering, particularly if presentation and printing are important.”

With a POB binder, the printed sheet is wrapped around a rigid board core, so the artwork becomes part of the binder itself. This allows full-colour graphics to run across the front cover, spine and back cover and gives much more freedom when the appearance of the finished product is a major part of the brief.

For presentation packs, sales literature, client documents, product launches and other customer-facing applications, that can make a real difference.

There is also considerable flexibility in the finish.
Gloss, matt, anti-scuff and soft-touch laminates can all be used to change both the appearance and the feel of the binder, giving much greater control over how the finished product is presented.

Specialist papers can take this further.

“If you want a leather look or a material-bound product, then paper over board is the route to go.”

These options can create a much more distinctive finished binder, particularly where the product forms part of a premium presentation or wider branded range.

A Middle Ground: Encapsulated Ring Binders

There is also a useful middle ground between a traditional PVC binder and a paper-over-board binder: the encapsulated ring binder.

As Lee puts it:

“If you are looking for something that still has the practicality of PVC, but you want full-colour artwork on the cover, an encapsulated binder is often a really good option.”

With this construction, printed sheets are sealed beneath clear PVC on the outside of the binder. You still get a durable, wipe-clean surface, but the printed artwork can become a much bigger part of the overall design.

That makes encapsulated binders particularly useful for training manuals, branded operational documents, healthcare folders, product guides and other applications where appearance and practicality are both important.

“You get a lot of the durability you would expect from PVC, but visually it can feel much more like a fully printed product.”

Compared with paper over board, the finish is different. POB tends to give a more integrated, premium printed appearance, while encapsulated PVC has a slightly more functional look. The benefit is that it can balance durability, print coverage and cost very effectively.

Clear pockets and other welded features can also be incorporated where required.

If standard PVC feels a little too plain, but paper over board is more than you need, encapsulated PVC can sit very nicely between the two.

What If You Need Durability and Strong Branding?

The choice is not always as simple as PVC for durability and POB for presentation.

PVC can still be strongly branded through printing, encapsulated graphics and welded features, while a laminated paper-over-board binder can provide a durable rigid construction capable of regular use.
The best material depends on which requirements matter most.

If the binder will spend its life in a workshop, hospital, site office or other working environment, the wipe-clean practicality of PVC may outweigh the benefits of an all-over printed finish.

If it will sit in front of customers, form part of a sales presentation or need to closely match a wider print campaign, POB may be the better choice.

Which Should You Choose?

For Lee, the answer is not about deciding which material is better.

“I wouldn’t say one is better than the other. It’s more about choosing the right binder for the job.”

His advice is straightforward:

“Think about where the binder is going to be used, how much use it’s going to get, and what you want it to look like. Then choose the material that suits the job.”
